The small stuff that's killing your room's vibe

Most decor crimes happen quietly. A series of small choices that slowly drain the life out of a room.

A giant frameless mirror glued to the bathroom wall. A limp cushion in the corner. A glossy fake plant doing absolutely nothing for anyone.

Together, it chips away at the home you were trying to create.

Today, I want to walk through the biggest offenders and what I’d get instead.

1. Builder Grade Mirrors & Lighting

You move in full of hope. Then you meet the bathroom: a frameless mirror, a tired ceiling fixture, and that particular kind of despair only bad lighting can create.

Swap the mirror for something framed, a sleek metal border, or a vintage find; both work. For lighting, ditch the builder-grade fixture and replace it with a pendant or a decent flush mount. Add lamps. Choose warmer bulbs around 2700K and aim for 90+ CRI.

Lighting is the single fastest way to change how a room feels. It's genuinely worth the effort.

2. Generic Decor

We've all panic-bought decor. Word art. Wood bead garlands. Pampas grass. All the β€˜influencer-approved’ pieces.

It doesn't age well.

Instead, choose pieces that actually reflect you. Real art, sculptural objects, interesting bowls, a stack of books you've genuinely read. Keep it simple. Prioritise meaning over trend.

3. Lazy Lamps

A lamp shouldn't just hold a bulb. Those generic bases with a plain white shade? They do absolutely nothing for your space.

Look for lamps that work as functional sculptures. Textured ceramics, stone, wood, sculptural metals. And pay attention to the shade β€” linen warms the light, pleats add texture, frosted glass softens, and metal directs it in pools.

The right lamp doesn't just illuminate. It transforms the space.

4. Obviously Fake Plants

Glossy plastic plants read as fake from across the room. If you want faux, choose something convincing. If not, skip it entirely and get the real thing in a smaller, more affordable form.

Make it look convincing

5. Unframed Prints

Taped-on prints make your walls look like a dorm room that never quite grew up.

Framing gives presence. It protects the art and makes the whole thing feel intentional.

Even a $15 IKEA frame will lift a print considerably. There's no good reason to leave art (unless it’s canvas) unframed.

6. Flat Cushions

This one drives me mad.

No matter how beautiful the cover, a flat cushion will undo all your good work.

The fix is straightforward: size up the insert, or get better inserts. A 16x16" cover needs an 18x18" insert. Plump cushions look so much more considered, and they cost almost nothing extra to get right.

The rooms that feel polished aren't necessarily more expensive. They're just decorated with more care.

If you want more on this, I made a video going deeper, check it out here.
Cheers,
Reynard
