Trends fade. Your home shouldn't.

We've all done it.

Scrolled through Instagram. Pinned something gorgeous on Pinterest.

Felt that little spark of "I need this in my home."

Statement walls. Bold colours. Curved sofas. Terrazzo everything.

They look incredible.

Until they don't.

And here's the uncomfortable truth:

Trends are fast. But homes are supposed to last.

So how do you enjoy what's new without your space feeling dated in six months – or worse, having to rip out expensive finishes you now hate?

That's what I want to walk through today.

The biggest mistake? Going all in.

I've seen it a hundred times:

  • Painting an entire living room bright teal because "teal is trending"

  • Splashing out on a statement chair in a colour you'll loathe by next winter

  • Installing backsplash tiles that are a fad, not a classic

When trends dominate a room's foundations, you're making a long-term commitment.

And long-term commitment to a trend almost always ends in regret.

Think of it this way:

Trends are seasoning, not the main course.

You want enough to taste. Not so much that it overpowers the dish.

Notice how both of the living/dining rooms above have mainly neutral backdrops, and only add in trendy elements in their decor, e.g., the balloon & leopard sculptures.

But here's the thing no one talks about…

The most important question isn't "Is this trending?"

It's "do I actually love this?"

Because if you genuinely love something, if it fits your taste, your lifestyle, your space, then it doesn't matter whether it's trendy or not.

Trends come and go.

Personal style sticks.

The problem isn't following trends.

The problem is following trends you don't actually like, just because someone on Instagram made them look good.

So before you add anything to your home, ask yourself:

"Would I still want this if no one else had it?"

If the answer is yes, go for it. Trend or not.

If you're only drawn to it because you've seen it everywhere lately… maybe pause.

How to incorporate trends without the commitment

The key is making trends reversible.

Here's how:

Soft furnishings – cushions, throws, rugs, curtains. Easy to swap out. Affordable to replace.

Artwork – a trendy print or poster can be rotated when you're over it.

Decor objects – vases, lamps, candles, sculptural pieces. These can be updated seasonally without touching the bones of your room.

I call these "reversible trends."

Because you can change them. Easily. Cheaply. Without calling a painter or demolishing your backsplash.

A Few Extra Tips to Stay Smart

  1. Mix Old and New: Combine trending elements with timeless pieces. It keeps your space fresh without feeling like a showroom.

  2. Test First: Try trends in a small area before committing. Even temporary decor swaps can show you how a trend feels in your space.

  3. Use Neutral Backdrops: walls, floors, and larger furniture should remain neutral to support changing trends. This makes it easier to switch accents.

  4. Rotate Regularly: Swap cushions, artwork, or decor seasonally. You’ll feel like your home is always evolving without spending too much.

Trends aren't the enemy.

They can make your home feel current. Inspiring. Alive.

The trick is using them like accessories, not anchors.

When you embrace trends this way, and only follow the ones you genuinely love, your home becomes a space you love today, tomorrow, and ten years from now.

Without the costly regrets.

Cheers,
Reynard
